Dark. Always dark. Tali looked at her watch twenty past six, nothing odd about that, but it was twenty past six in the evening and it was mid June. Tali was old enough to remember the blue skies and BBQs she had shared in the back garden with her friends, that was before; before the war on terrorism started making people paranoid and living under the eye of big brother; before global warming made the pavements hot under foot and before the pollution was so thick that blue sunny skies were things of paintings and memories and that rain wasn’t something you protected your skin from. It had been a long coach ride and all she wanted was to get to where she was going, to make it in one piece and before lock down. She had been alone on the coach for the best part of the journey, with just one or two people joining her for one or two stops before getting off again. The journey had been long, too long and while she was alone again on the bus she dared to let her eyes rest shut.

When she opened them she wasn’t alone.
